The future looks bright for the Alberta Downs horse racing track in Lacombe as Central Alberta born and raised entrepreneurs have partnered to purchase the property.
Kurt and Kyla Belich and Ross Morrison took possession of the property on Tuesday and they have high hopes for the facility’s future.
“We have confidence that things are going to proceed well,” said Kurt.
“We are excited to see it operational again and we are excited to have something that builds economic strength and health for both the County (of Lacombe) and the City (of Lacombe).”
The track, which is located just outside of Lacombe on the QEII Hwy., is the only one mile dirt track and 7/8 mile grass track in western Canada.
The facility also includes a large grandstand, a number of stables and an area for warm-up.
Steve Christie, mayor of Lacombe, said he is excited to hear that new owners have taken possession of the Alberta Downs track.
“The fact that this has been purchased, that is a great thing,” he said. “To have successful businesses on your boundaries is a positive thing.”
Meanwhile, details of future plans for the racetrack will be unveiled in the coming months.
“What we have planned is very exciting,” said Morrison.
