Red Deerians are invited to share their thoughts on the places, events and activities that make up the heritage of the community.

As part of the community heritage mapping project, City staff will hold several public consultations to learn what makes Red Deer special to its residents. 



“We want to learn about the heritage sites and activities that are important to the people who live here,” said Janet Pennington, heritage community development coordinator. “Our public consultations will be very interactive, as people will be able to share their thoughts, they can fill out a questionnaire and they can identify heritage sites on the large neighbourhood maps that we’ll provide.” 



The heritage of a community is often associated with built structures, but Pennington notes that events, activities, folklore and oral histories are all contributing elements to a region’s history.

“By working with community members, we’ll learn more about the comprehensive, multicultural aspects that make up Red Deer’s history,” she said. “This will help us to identify our community heritage values. It will also allow us to better preserve the places, events and activities that represent these often-overlooked aspects of heritage.” 



Public consultations for the community heritage mapping project will take place on June 15 at the Golden Circle from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; June 27 at the Mayor’s Garden Party which is held at City Hall Park from 1:30 to 4 p.m.; July 1 during the Canada Day celebration at Bower Ponds from noon to 5 p.m. and July 18 at Victoria Park from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Additional sessions will be scheduled later in the summer. The information collected will assist City staff to update the inventory of potentially significant heritage sites, events and activities. This inclusive approach will help to preserve Red Deer’s heritage for future generations.
